Whidbey Children’s Theatre, a non-profit organization located in Langley on South Whidbey Island, serves children aged 4-19 by using theatre as a lens for education. Facing challenges with an aging building and uncomfortable temperatures during rehearsals and performances, the theatre partnered with Island Ductless Heat Pumps to install heat pumps throughout their building with hopes to improve the comfort for students, staff, and audiences.
Situation
Whidbey Children’s Theatre stands as a vibrant gathering place for families and young artists, nurturing creativity and community ties in Langley. The former middle school auditorium not only supports youth arts education but also acts as a venue for performances, making its comfort vital for ongoing community involvement. Addressing the building’s outdated heating and cooling systems was essential to maintain the theatre as a welcoming environment for students, staff, and audiences alike.
"Island Ductless Heat Pumps was incredibly thoughtful and responsive, keeping us informed throughout the process and ensuring our needs were met at every step."
Ann Johnson, Executive Director
Challenge
Outdated building features, such as poor insulation, single-pane windows, and high ceilings, created persistent challenges in maintaining comfortable indoor temperatures, leading to cold winters and excessive heat during crowded summer events. As a result, both students and audiences often struggled to fully enjoy rehearsals and performances due to the challenging environment.
Solution
To address these comfort challenges, Island Ductless Heat Pumps installed four large heat pumps in the main auditorium and an additional unit in the black box theatre, along with all the necessary infrastructure. The installation process was seamless and efficiently coordinated to minimize disruption to ongoing rehearsals and activities.
Result
The upgrades provided lasting value to the Whidbey Children’s Theatre facility, benefiting both the organization and the broader community. By enhancing comfort and usability, the new heat pumps contributed important capital improvements to a building owned by the school district, ensuring a more welcoming environment for future generations of students and guests.
"The new heat pumps have made our spaces warm and welcoming, allowing us to focus on our students and audiences without worrying about comfort."
Ann Johnson
